THE SCORECARD

Geography quiz
scoring.

A closer look at points, rarity estimates and saved results.

Five rounds, up to 500 points

Each expedition contains five questions. A correct country earns the number of points assigned to it for that question. An incorrect answer, a skipped question or a timeout scores zero. Your total is the sum of the five rounds, with a maximum of 500 points.

Scoring tiers for a correct answer
PointsTier
40Familiar
55Less Obvious
70Uncommon
85Rare Find
100Hidden Gem

The same country can earn a different score on another question. Which answers are valid depends on the wording and scope of each clue.

Are these live rarity scores?

No. These are fixed scores, not the percentage of players who chose an answer. Some tiers are editorial estimates. For UNESCO World Heritage questions, score bands are generated from the number of matching properties; for some World Bank indicator questions, 2023 population is used as a proxy, with smaller populations generally receiving higher scores. These methods are explained in the question and the sources.

A score does not measure a country’s importance or establish an official ranking. Some source-derived questions and the map still need independent review.

When a country cannot be judged

Some datasets do not provide the value required for a particular country. In that case, the game will tell you the source data are unavailable and ask you to choose another country. The selection is not counted as a wrong answer; in Timed mode, the clock continues.

First and best results

Completed results are stored locally in your browser, with Relaxed and Timed kept separate. Records distinguish Daily dates, individual chapters and unlimited play, as well as the question-bank version. Your first completed result and your best result can differ.

For Daily, first-attempt eligibility is tracked for each UTC date and pace. A replay or an abandoned first attempt becomes practice; practice can still contribute to the best result. Older archive starts are practice. The result summary you can share does not include the questions or country names.
